Calixarenes are a special class of macrocyclic compounds that consist of phenolic units and have a characteristic cavity-like structure. These molecules are known for their ability to selectively bind ions, molecules or smaller compounds in their cavity. They usually have a shell structure with an open top and a closed bottom.
These compounds are used in a variety of applications including:
Chemical sensors and analytics, extraction and separation, catalysis and promising materials in various scientific and technological applications, including medicine and materials science.
